Search Tips.

You can refine your search if looking for a ship, hotel, business or mine by selecting that in the fields.

If the name of a business or ship begins with “The” that will not be in the name column. Ie. The Great Extended Mine, would come under “Great Extended Mine.”

If a single person is operating a business the initials or given name will be in the second column, but if it is a company then the initials are in the first name column. Ie. J. Citizen & Bros. Will be indexed as Citizen, J. & Bros. But for J. Citizen who runs an auctioneer business it is “Citizen” in the first name column and the initial “J” in the second.

With names that have an apostrophe like O’Brien or O’Sullivan it is always a good idea to search with the apostrophe and without. Also try without the initial “O”.

Searches can be made for parts of a word as well. These may need to be refined to reduce the number of results.

The definition of Advertisement, Report, Notice or List refers to what the article was. The “list” is if a name appears in a list with no other information, as a list of donators or a list of signatures on a petition. If there is any other information with the name it has been categorised as a “report”. If it is a “notice” it is similar to a birth or death notice or a notice of a meeting or event.
